Descriptive Essay On Patriots Day - 1448 Words

Patriot’s Day is an official state holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord which marked the first shots of the Revolutionary War. Since 1969, the holiday has been celebrated on the third Monday of April in the states of Massachusetts and Maine. It marks a three-day weekend for these citizens. The biggest celebration on Patriot’s Day is the Boston Marathon, which has been a tradition since 1897. When people think of Boston, they usually think of the Red Sox. Their fan base is so passionate and loyal no matter how poorly the team performs. Every Patriot’s Day, the Red Sox play on their home field at 11 A.M which than leads to all of the Bostonians watching the Boston Marathon. Boston’s response to the marathon bombings – which saved lives, maintained order, eventually captured the lone surviving suspect, and brought a community together to heal, all in less than a week was what truly made the city â€Å"strong.† When news spread to the Red Sox while they were on the road, players took action immediately. They asked clubhouse workers to sew â€Å"617’, which is the Boston area code, on the back of a road jersey. The next day, the jersey hung in their dugout with â€Å"Boston† above the area code and â€Å"Strong† below it. Head coach John Farrell stated in a press conference that â€Å"Even though we may not be in Boston right now, we carry this with us. We feel very much a part of the city and the community and everything that goes on there.† The Red Sox ended up winning that game by a score of 7-2. While the city was healing, baseball was a distraction to keep everyone calm. The Red Sox are a way of life in Boston and this could help fans in sorrow and pain. The team returned home on April 20th, for a series against the Kansas City Royals.
